Child Psychotherapy

Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is a specialist form of talking therapy that helps the child or young person understand their emotions, thoughts and behaviours at a deeper level. Individual sessions are adapted to the child’s developmental stage and may include talking, play, and creative expression.

The child psychotherapist is trained to gain an understanding of the child’s internal world by carefully tuning into the child’s fears, hopes and confusions that are communicated through the child’s play, drawing, storytelling and through the therapeutic relationship.

Rather than simply tackling the apparent surface “symptom”, the relationship between the child/young person and the therapist is central to the treatment. It is through this relationship that a child or young person can be helped to understand him/herself and what might be underlying the difficulties, and to explore other areas which might be causing problems, thereby manage feelings and behaviour more effectively. This can lead to improvement in their capacity to learn, grow and relate to others.

About

Child Psychotherapy can support children and young people experiencing anxiety, low mood, behavioural difficulties, trauma, loss, family changes, relationship challenges, or emotional difficulties. It provides a safe space to explore feelings, build resilience, and develop healthier ways of coping.

Sessions are tailored to the child’s age and developmental stage. Younger children may express themselves through play, drawing, or storytelling, while older children and adolescents are more likely to use conversation. The therapist creates a safe, supportive environment where the child can explore their thoughts and feelings at their own pace.
