Oncology Massage

Oncology massage is a gentle restorative massage using slow and steady movements that is adapted to make it safe for an individual with a previous or current cancer diagnosis. Oncology massage therapists are fully trained in the specifics of cancer treatments providing a type of massage that works with the body’s central nervous system, helping the body to relax and promote sleep, sleep deprivation has been linked to a lower immunity.

This type of massage can also play an important role in palliative care as well as tolerating cancer treatment side effects such as nausea, peripheral neuropathy ( numbness) headaches, anxiety and aches and pains.
Oncology massage provides a supportive soothing touch, as well as enhancing the client’s sense of well-being and quality of life.

A message from our Oncology Massage Therapist- Debbie Lyon

“I am so pleased and excited to join the team at the One Allan park wellbeing clinic in Stirling, offering Oncology massage to clients who have had or are currently receiving treatment for cancer.

When someone asks ‘what is an oncology massage?’ I explain it’s a restorative form of massage, provided by a therapist who has received extra specialised training in Oncology.

The therapist looks at how to make the massage safe for you and to enhance your quality of life, having full knowledge about the side effects, such as lymphoedema caused by cancer treatment, and adapting the treatments to your needs.

Many clients come in feeling overwhelmed, stressed and defeated. With the constant flow of cancer treatments and appointments it can be a constant form of trauma.
Ask yourself, are those cancer treatments invasive or connective? The majority of the time you’ll find it’s very invasive, especially if going for blood tests, radiotherapy, chemotherapy etc.

Introducing nurturing sessions, to counteract all the invasive sessions, will restore your wellbeing, calm and peace.

Oncology massage gives the client a sense of control with their body and mind. It makes you feel good, provides a soothing and supportive touch and enhances your quality of life by promoting sleep. The goal is to help with your relaxation, bringing you back into alignment.

There are so many benefits with Oncology massage, it decreases stress levels and pain, improves mobility by increasing range of motion, especially after surgeries, It also decreases the intensity of peripheral neuropathy.

Massage during cancer treatment and recovery have numerous benefits

●  Strengthened immune system and improves mood and sleep.

As an informed therapist I have to consider the clients stage of health, treatment, their goals and most important their emotional state. Providing a safe space for your client is just as important, so It’s always wonderful to hear genuine feedback expressing this;

‘Before meeting Debbie, I had been looking for someone that I could relax with but trust to massage me without the fear my tumours would be aggravated.

Debbie was amazing throughout the full process. She was kind and compassionate, listening to my journey and then adapting my sessions based on my requirements.

I’ve had three sessions with Debbie so far and will be back for more. Each time I’ve been in Debbie has cared enough to remember what we have been chatting about before, showing an interest in me which was just as important as the massage itself.’

Manual Lymphatic Drainage ( MLD) is a specialised form of massage that will encourage the natural drainage of the lymph. It has powerful cleansing, relaxing , pain relieving and immunological effects. The aim of MLD is to move fluid from the swollen area into a place where the lymphatic system is working normally,
It is particularly useful for the treatment of lymphoedema and swelling that is often seen in response to cancer treatments such as radiotherapy. Its specialised pumping technique can be used to prevent or treat lymphoedema, and improve lymph drainage.
